Easton Update: April 27, 2005

Easton's Home! On Wednesday we got to bring Easton home. We went to the hospital in the morning and went over some last minute notes with the nurses. He past his car seat test the night before so we got to hold him without his monitors. Basically the car seat test is where they put him in a car seat and have him hooked up to his monitors for about 1 1/2 hours. If his breathing, heart rate, etc. are fine for that period of time he is taken of the monitors. 24 hours later we got take him home. Tami and I are especially happy being able to have him at home. We initially thought we would have to leave him in the hospital for two weeks, but it seems he was doing well enough to come home after 10 days. I know it doesn't sound like that much sooner, but we're glad to have him home sooner that later.

At the time of leaving the hospital Easton weighed in at 4 lb 11 oz. He had gained back almost all of his birth weight so things are looking good. I'll let you know how things are going in the next post.

Easton Update: April 21, 2005
Hello Everyone. Easton is doing much better and has improved greatly over the past couple of days. He no longer needs the CPAP (Constant Postive Air Pressure) and they will be taking out the IV on Friday. Tami was able to hold Easton for the first time on Wednesday evening, which she really enjoyed. The nurses have also been letting Tami change him and look after him a little more each day. They still have keep him in an isolette (Incubator) to keep his body tempurate regulated while he sleeps. They do take him out when they feed him though, so Tami can hold him.

Since Easton was born at roughly 35 weeks and they consider 37 weeks to be full term, Easton will most likely be in the hospital for at least another week. If he does stay the full two weeks we should be bringing him home around the 2nd of May. Since Tami's birthday is on May 3rd, that could turn out to be an excellent birthday present. We'll keep you all posted on when he's coming home with us and Tami and I would like to thank everyone for all the calls. I've posted a few pictures that we took yesterday below. Take care, Mark

It's A Boy: April 18, 2005
Well as unbelievable as it is, the inevitable happened. It just happened a little earlier than anyone expected. Tami gave birth to a little baby boy early Monday morning at St. Boniface Hospital. Easton Matthew Coombs Kruk was born at 4:37 AM (04:37 24h clock) on April 18, weighing in at 4 lb 15 oz. Tami and Easton are doing fine.

Easton is obviously a little early and is having a bit of trouble breathing, but he is breathing on his own. He is in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at St. Boniface and will probably be there for a week or two. Tami will most likely be discharged on Wednesday as she is doing very well.

There is a bit of a delivery story, but here is a shortened version. Sunday night at around 10:30 PM Tami felt a little uncomfortable but nothing usual. We then went to bed around 12:00-12:30 AM. Tami woke me up around 2:15 AM saying she thought she was having contractions. She said she had the on-call doctor paged and we began the breathing. When the doctor called us a few minutes later Tami told him that the contractions were 8 minutes apart. he said time them for about an hour and see if the time between gets shorter or further apart. We started timing the contractions at around 2:30 AM. At around 3:30 the contractions were about 5 minutes apart. At that time Tami decided we should go to the hospital.

We left the garage at 3:39 (I specifically noted) and got to the hospital around 3:55 AM. Going in through emergency we were checked in and headed to the Labour Delivery area. Upon initial assessment at 4:10 AM we were told Tami was going to be having he baby soon. I asked, "soon as in, a week from now or today". The nurse replied, "Tami is fully dilated and she's going to having this baby in a half hour. Tami and I were both like, WHAT!

After that things started to move really fast. We headed up to the delivery room at 4:15 AM where Tami was prepped. The doctor came in at about 4:30 AM and a few minutes later Easton was born at 4:37 AM. Since Easton was early we didn't really have a chance to get to hold him, but they did show him to Tami for a few seconds before they whisked him away. There is some more to the story but we'll leave that for when you see you all.

We'll let everyone know when Easton is home. Take care and see you all later. Signing off, a very tired Mark.
